Have you been struggling with your new mom journey? Or, perhaps you are a woman trying to conceive and experiencing fertility challenges or pregnancy loss. Additionally, you may also be newly pregnant and experiencing anxiety symptoms, or have recently had a child and are finding the adjustment challenging/struggling with postpartum emotions. Perhaps your children are no longer babies, but you still find that you do not feel quite your best.

Your experiences are not uncommon. In fact, one in ten fathers and one in five mothers will experience a mental health condition within pregnancy or the first year postpartum. Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the most common complication of pregnancy. For women with a history of pregnancy loss and prior mental health concerns, the risk is even higher. The treatment rates are also low – many women go years without seeking care, causing symptoms to extend well-beyond the first year postpartum. Suffice to say, being a mom is a challenging experience from a mental health perspective.

The good news is, many women's perinatal mental health conditions can improve with adequate treatment. At Mind Made Well Counseling, we are trained in the treatment of perinatal mental health disorders through the leading certification body for perinatal mental health, Postpartum Support International.

Many clients also find it comforting to know that we are both moms ourselves, and well-aquatinted with the challenges of parenting from both a professional and personal perspective.

Support Options

Therapy is a personal process, and treatment is always individualized to the needs and preferences of the person receiving care. Below are some of the common types of therapy offered.

  • Enhance your mental health with supportive counseling focused on issues important to you, including managing the invisible load of parenting, communication with partners, developing a support network/village, and managing mom guilt.

  • Supportive Women's Therapy for Women who have experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth.

  • Designed to help you protect and preserve your mental health through proactive wellness planning and ongoing support with a therapist throughout your pregnancy and the first year postpartum.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a semi-structured therapy that focuses on how our thinking patterns effect our day-to-day life. CBT has been shown to be an effective treatment method for both postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. Sessions are generally weekly and taper as the you begin to feel better.

  • Exposure Response Prevention/ Counseling for Perinatal OCD

    Someone with PPOCD can have repetitive, upsetting and unwanted thoughts or mental images (obsessions), and sometimes they need to do certain things over and over (compulsions) to reduce the anxiety caused by those thoughts. These individuals find these thoughts very scary and unusual and are very unlikely to ever act on them.

    Exposure Response Prevention is an evidence-based, structured therapy that helps the person experiencing OCD change how they respond to their intrusive thoughts. Sessions are typically once or twice per week to start.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy is a highly-structured, evidence-based therapy that is used to treat PTSD. Perinatal PSTD may occur following a miscarriage, stillbirth, early infant loss, or a traumatic labor and deliver experience. CPT has been shown many studies to be helpful in reducing the symptoms of PTSD. Sessions occur once to twice per week. Average length of treatment is 12 sessions.
